SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Peninsula High’s Laura Salmonson went four for four with a double and four runs batted in to lead the Red team to a 13-3 victory over the Blue in the South Bay All-Star Softball Classic at El Segundo’s Recreation Park on Saturday night.

Salmonson, who played right field and second base, helped the Red score 12 runs in the fourth through sixth innings. The Red totaled 13 hits.

“I tried to look at it as more of a fun game and didn’t try to have that much pressure,” Salmonson said.

Baseball Classic--West Torrance pitcher Mike Myro struck out six batters and gave up only one run to help the Red to a 10-4 victory over the Blue Friday night at Stevenson Field in El Segundo.

Myro also cleared the air about his draft status. It had been reported in Friday’s South Bay edition of The Times that Myro was a seventh-round selection of the Houston Astros, but he was mistaken for UCLA player John Myrow.

It turns out that Myro was a 60th-round selection of the Astros.

Myro plans to attend Harbor College and might sign with the Astros after his freshman year.

“It was kind of strange, I had a few guys joke with me about (the mistaken identity),” Myro said. “Tonight I just started to get into a rhythm and started throwing strikes.”

The Blue scored five runs in the first two innings despite only three hits off of Red starting pitcher Jamin Kear of El Segundo. Two errors, a hit batter and a walk helped the Blue to its lead.

Carson’s Jason Cole was the winning pitcher, striking out three in three innings. He did not give up a run.
