No. 7 Tennessee Has No Trouble in Romping Over Kentucky, 48-0
Cory Fleming caught two touchdown passes, setting a Tennessee record for career touchdown receptions with 18, and Charlie Garner rushed 19 times for 186 yards and another score as the seventh-ranked Volunteers crushed Kentucky, 48-0, Saturday.
Tennessee, 8-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Southeastern Conference, handed Kentucky (6-5, 4-4) its worst shutout loss since 1921, when it was defeated by Centre, 55-0.
“You never stop and think you’re at a level where you still can’t learn,” said Tennessee quarterback Heath Shuler, who completed 23 of 34 passes for 221 yards. “You can’t let down until after the last game of the season.”
Tennessee, which amassed 571 yards, has outscored its last three opponents, 148-13, but Florida and Alabama will play in the SEC championship game Dec. 4.
“We controlled our own destiny when we lost to Florida (41-34) and tied Alabama,” said linebacker Reggie Ingram, “but it is a shame that we won’t be able to play in the SEC championship game. I feel we are the best team in the league at this point.”
