Golden West won its fifth consecutive State water polo title with a 14-12 victory over Grossmont in the final Saturday at Modesto.

The Rustlers (31-4), the top-ranked team in the state all season, beat Orange Coast, 11-7, earlier Saturday in a semifinal.

It was the 12th State water polo title for Golden West since 1977 and the second time the Rustlers have won five in a row; the first was from 1978-82.

Jude Allan and Curt Bowman had four goals each, and Daniel Julson came off the bench to score three in the title game for Golden West.

The key score was a two-pointer by Allan with 29 seconds left in the third quarter to put Golden West ahead, 11-7.

The play of Allan and Julson was especially key for Golden West because Alfred VanDorp and Bowman, the team’s second- and third-leading scorers, were ejected midway in the third quarter.

“It was a day for the reserves,” Golden West Coach Ken Hamdorf said. “Those guys came through and saved the day for us. It was a good experience for them because those are the guys we will be counting on next season.”

The victory over Orange Coast was the third this season for Golden West. VanDorp had a two-pointer with seven seconds left in the third quarter to put the Rustlers ahead, 7-4.
