OUTLOOK

Talk about a tough act to follow, Pyle, who begins his first year as head coach of the girls’ team, takes over from Bob Becker, whose overall record was 96-14. Becker also took a team to the Southern Section Divison 3A championship game in 1993, where the Vaqueros lost to Costa mesa, 51-49. Nevertheless, Pyle is coming off a very successful stint as coach of the school’s frosh/soph boys’ team, which won league championships. On paper, Pyle thinks his team has a good chance to repeat as league champion. While he’s lost some key starters from last year, he has some strong players ready to step up. Besides seniors Newman, Littman, Frank and all-county selection Rodgers, who led the team with 21.5 points, 12.4 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game, Pyle has high expectations for Euresy, who plays forward, and Vickers, a junior guard. “Vickers got some valuable experience when she played during (the playoffs) last year,” Pyle said. But what makes this team so appealing is that all of the players are “overachievers.” Pyle said the the overachieving spirit that drove last year’s team to the division finals is embodied in this year’s squad. Whenever a winning tradition is established, it’s always easier to get the players motivated. It’s safe to say Rancho Alamitos is amid its golden years.
