LILLEHAMMER, Norway — The dominant bobsledders of the last decade--Gustav Weder of Switzerland I and Wolfgang Hoppe of Germany I--were applying the heat as Harald Czudaj of Germany II took a slim lead into today’s final two heats of the four-man competition.
The second-place Weder, 32, has already won the gold in two-man and won the gold in two-man and a bronze in four-man in 1992.
The third-place Hoppe, 36, won silver in four-man in 1992, silver in both four-man and two-man in 1988, and gold in both four-man and two-man in 1984.
He has also won seven world bobsled titles, and still competes in motocross, a family tradition.
“That’s where I get the necessary courage and feel for speed,” he said.
