“Sex, magic and mystery are key elements in one of the most popular genres of contemporary fiction and the most financially promising for new writers,” according to Margaret Brownley, author of many romance novels including “The Kissing Bandit” and “Rawhide and Lace.” Brownley will teach a workshop on writing and selling romance fiction from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Learning Tree University’s Thousand Oaks campus. Medieval expert Sharan Newman of Newbury Park, whose “Death Comes as Epiphany,” published last year by Tor Books, introduced the 12th-Century French heroine-detective Catherine LeVendeur, will sign her new book “The Devil’s Door” at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mysteries to Die For. Newman continues the adventures of the intelligent, independent Catherine whose courage and curiosity put her in harm’s way in the dangerous, superstitious world of medieval Europe.

Writing for magazines is more than just whipping out the yellow pad or firing up the word processor and churning out stories. Instructor Michael Foley will focus on research, interviews, query letters and multiple sales in his class on “How to Break Into the Magazine Market” at 6:30 p.m. April 21 at Ventura College, 4667 Telegraph Road.
