Los Alamitos Elementary Hit by Fire

A fire on Sunday swept through a two-story building at Los Alamitos Elementary School, damaging five classrooms and causing an estimated $250,000 damage.

A fire official said the cause of the blaze was “definitely suspicious,” adding that several witnesses observed a few teen-agers running from an area near the building minutes before the fire.

Orange County Fire Department Capt. Dan Young said Los Alamitos police confirmed there had been a burglary in the building shortly before the fire broke out at 3:30 p.m.

The blaze destroyed three classrooms and damaged two others. Three dozen firefighters put out the blaze in about 25 minutes.

Some students who attend classes today will be displaced, Young said.

“Investigators are not yet willing to call it an arson,” Young said. “But that is likely to change. We are looking for people to come forward with information about those teen-agers who were running from the building.”
