A man whose car crashed on the Golden State Freeway and seriously injured a passenger has been booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, police said Friday.

Carmen Curtis, 20, of San Fernando was thrown from the automobile, police said. Curtis was taken by helicopter to Henry Mayo and transferred Friday to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Panorama City. She was listed in fair condition with a separated right shoulder and lacerations to her hands and ankles, Kaiser spokeswoman Jessica Lott said.

Neither adult was wearing a seat belt, said Officer Ben Dibene of the California Highway Patrol.

A 3-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy in the back seat were not injured, the officer added.

“I don’t know how these kids survived because they weren’t wearing seat belts either,” Dibene said.
