To Halt Tollway, Apathy Must Stop
* I was one of the protesters who was at the grading site for the San Joaquin Hills tollway June 15.
While driving by, I saw protesters and decided to stop and help, as did a few other motorists.
It seemed to me that the majority of drivers going by that day were giving us thumbs up and nods of approval; however, they were not stopping to help.
Public apathy about this project has got to end.
Other large projects, such as the Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco, were stopped after the concrete had already been poured, but it took people doing something active about it to get that freeway project halted.
If the UC regents can legally sell an ecological preserve to the developers of the toll road, then it seems that a future City Council of Laguna Beach could sell the newly acquired Laguna Canyon Parklands back to the developers so that we will not just have the toll road running through the canyon--more housing tracts and shopping malls are the ultimate goal of Orange County developers.
