Volunteers Can Help Prevent Child Abuse
* “Abused Children Staying Longer in O.C. Shelter,” (June 21) eloquently pointed out the critical problem of child abuse in Orange County. As Supervisor (William G.) Steiner said, there is no single answer to this complex problem. However, one promising solution is a concerted effort to prevent the problem from occurring or recurring once it is identified.
We have heard child-abuse statistics so often that perhaps we are numb to the human tragedy and astronomical costs the cold numbers suggest. But for those whose hearts are stirred by this issue and wish to make a difference, many volunteer opportunities exist.
For 10 years, the Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center has matched trained volunteers with families who are struggling with abusive tendencies. Dedicated volunteers work with a family for one year teaching parenting and communication skills and problem-solving techniques. They break the abuse cycle and help families live together in a nonviolent home.
