Kings Send Paek to Ottawa After Short L.A. Stay

Defenseman Jim Paek, obtained by the Kings along with fellow defenseman Marty McSorley on Feb. 16 from the Pittsburgh Penguins for forwards Tomas Sandstrom and Shawn McEachern, was traded to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday for future considerations.

The 27-year-old Paek, a four-year veteran and the NHL’s only Korean-born player, appeared in 18 games for the Kings, getting a goal and an assist along with 10 penalty minutes.

Pierre Dorion, 49, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ director of scouting, died at his Ottawa home of a heart attack.

Winston Cup driver Terry Labonte started fast and finished first in the Fay’s 150 NASCAR Busch Grand National stock car race at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Despite starting 21st, Labonte moved into the lead in only 19 laps and led all but one of the remaining 43 laps in the 150-mile race on the 2.45-mile track.

Chile’s Eliseo Salazar won the pole for today’s Glen Continental International Motor Sports Assn. (IMSA) Exxon World Sports Car and Supreme GT race at Watkins Glen, N.Y., covering the 3.4-mile circuit at an average speed of 118.27 m.p.h.

Al Unser Jr. won the pole for today’s Budweiser-G.I. Joe’s 200 at Portland International Speedway with a track-qualifying record average speed of 116.861 m.p.h.

Track and Field

Linford Christie won the 100-meter sprint for the fifth consecutive year at the European Cup track and field competition at Birmingham, England, finishing in a relatively slow time of 10.21 seconds.

Germany led the men’s team standings after the first day of the two-day meet with 62 points, eight more than second-place England.

An address from the Rev. Jesse Jackson will close the 27th L.A. Watts games today at 3:30 at Compton College.

The games, the nation’s largest high school athletic event with 12,000 Southern California area competitors, is a two-weekend competition encompassing 12 boys’ and girls’ sports.

The world-record 36-race winning streak of Pat C Rendezvous ended when the greyhound finished third in the $25,000 Champion’s Challenge at the Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Pat C Rendezvous had broken the world record when she won her 33rd race in row. Picki Princess won the Champion’s Challenge, paying $11.
