BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : To Dorsey High’s Boys, 2 Dons Don’t Make It Right

The Dorsey High boys’ basketball team must be getting tired of looking up at a scoreboard and seeing another team nicknamed the Dons winning.

Two weeks ago, the Compton Dominguez Dons beat the Dorsey Dons, 92-58, behind the scoring of Tommy Prince in the finals of the Watts Summer Games at Compton College.

Last week, the score was closer as Dominguez escaped with a 76-71 win over Dorsey in the second round of the Artesia Tournament. Prince led all scorers with 32 points.

“They had another good run down at the end of the game again,” Dorsey Coach Kevin Gibson said. “The difference was that our big men didn’t get into foul trouble.”

Dorsey has added two new players to its roster: 6-8 junior forward Marcus Mason and 6-4 senior forward Tim Johnson. Mason was academically ineligible last season and Johnson is a transfer from Washington.

“They will give us depth at the forward position, which we need,” Gibson said.

Dominguez is the hottest high school basketball team this summer. The Dons are 16-0, winning both the Watts Summer Games and the Artesia Tournament. Dominguez, however, pulled out of the Pump Discovery Shootout after winning its second game by forfeit Tuesday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Showdown--Crenshaw’s Ronnie Arch vs. Santa Ana Valley’s Olujimi Mann.

A matchup worth watching was created when Crenshaw scheduled a home-and-away series with Santa Ana Valley.

It will be the first time the Cougars play a non-tournament game in Orange County, according to Coach Willie West.

The Cougars will host Santa Ana Valley next season and will play in Orange County during the 1995-96 season.

Mann, who will be a junior, is one of the top players in Orange County while Arch is the top returning scorer from the two-time State Division I champion Cougars.

Schedules--The West Coast All-Star Camp, which began Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, will give Southern California basketball fans their first glimpse of the nation’s top players returning from the Nike Sports Festival and Adidas ABCD Camps.

Starting today is the Superstar Camp, which returns to the campus of UC Santa Barbara.

Dominguez, Long Beach Poly and Westchester will be the top-seeded teams in the 8th annual Fairfax Summer Classic, which begins Thursday. Among the top players competing are Prince, Danny Walker and Ben Sanders of Westchester, Darwin Carter of Manual Arts, Damian Dawson of Poly and Duane Davis of Fairfax.

Defending champion St. John Bosco also returns, but without Jelani Gardner, who will play for Cal in the fall. Other past winners include Pasadena Muir and Artesia.

Correction--The Slam ‘N Jam Invitational begins Saturday and continues through July 21 at South Torrance and West Torrance high schools. The tournament features some of the top players in the country and runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
