Gaston Advances in Modesto

Andrea Gaston of Chatsworth led a group of four area golfers who advanced Tuesday to the match-play portion of the Women’s Trans-National Championship at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.
Gaston, with a 36-hole total of one-under-par 147, tied for third behind Jill McGill of Denver (145) and longtime amateur standout Carol Thompson (146) of Sewickley, Penn. McGill has won two major amateur events this summer.
The field of 144 was trimmed to 64 for match play, which begins today on the par-74 course. Also advancing were Heidi Voorhees of Valley Village (155), Linda Chen Olson of Granada Hills (160) and Jody Duclos of Moorpark (161).
Chad Wright of Ventura shot a 67, giving him a two-round total of 135, to win the Ojai City Junior championship at the Ojai Valley Inn and Country Club.
Tennis
Second-seeded Gene Malin of Woodland Hills advanced in the U.S. Tennis Assn. national men’s 45-and-older hardcourt championships at the Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.
The National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis will sponsor a tournament, believed to be the first of its kind in the San Fernando Valley, Aug. 19-21 at the Balboa Tennis Center in Encino. The tournament will have multiple flights, age and gender divisions.

Baseball
Scott Radinsky and Ozzie Guillen of the Chicago White Sox will be the featured guest instructors at the Louisville Slugger Baseball Camp, to be held Aug. 2-6 at Camarillo High.
Westlake High Coach Rich Herrera, Mike Scyphers of Simi Valley and former Camarillo coach Jack Willard are overseeing the camp for players aged 6 to 17.

Softball
Ventura College will conduct an eight-week women’s fast pitch softball league beginning Sept. 11. The league will consist of 18-and-under varsity and junior varsity divisions, and a 14-and-under division.
All games will be played at Ventura College.

Rick Hayashida, an assistant football coach at Chaminade High for the past three seasons, has been added to the staff at El Camino Real.
