A violent three-car traffic collision on California 126 at Timber Canyon Road--between the cities of Santa Paula and Fillmore--claimed the lives of two people late Sunday afternoon, injured 11 others and tied up traffic for hours, authorities said.

The 5:18 p.m. accident killed an adult and a child, sent five people to hospitals with major injuries, six with moderate injuries, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The identities of the dead were not available. The cause of the collision was not immediately known.

The injured were taken by helicopter and ambulance to Santa Paula Medical Center and to Ventura County Medical Center, authorities said.

The CHP said the cars involved in the crash included a gray Toyota sedan, a red Nissan sport utility truck and a Ford passenger van.

The late-afternoon accident closed the highway, causing the CHP and the California Department of Transportation to take traffic off the roadway at California 23 in Fillmore and at Hallock Drive in Santa Paula. CHP and Caltrans officials hoped to reopen the roadway by 11 p.m.
