Conversion Pass Helps Canyon Edge Loara
Canyon quarterback Adam Hoover threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns as the Comanches held on to beat Loara, 15-13, Thursday at Western High.
Hoover completed 17 of 25 passes, had one intercepted, but it was receiver Greg Jacobs who caught the biggest pass of the night, a two-point conversion in the third quarter.
On its first possession of the second half, Canyon (3-0) scored on a five-yard pass from Hoover to Jacobs to break a 7-7 tie.
Jacobs then picked up a bad snap on the point-after attempt, rolled left, and hit tight end Brian Owens in the end zone, giving the Comanches a 15-7 lead.
Loara mounted a threat late in the fourth quarter, starting on its 33-yard line with four minutes left. Quarterback Jim Kirkland marched the Saxons down field in nine plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Kerry Peoples.
But Kirkland’s two-point conversion pass flew over Matt Barling’s head, leaving Loara with its third consecutive defeat.
Hoover put Canyon ahead in the first quarter, hitting Larry Witt on a 38-yard touchdown pass. Loara tied the score just before the end of the first half, on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kirkland to Eddie Williams.
