The Mighty Ducks gathered in their dressing room after practice Thursday and listened intently as Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the NHL season will not open Oct. 1 without a new collective bargaining agreement, then went ahead with their preparations to play an exhibition game against Dallas at 7 tonight at The Pond.

“If there is no start to the regular season, it seems strange to prepare for the start of the regular season,” forward Stu Grimson said. “But through all this, there’s always the window of opportunity that a new deal can be ratified within a few days. So to keep working and to stay in shape and to keep progressing . . . is an advantage the league will enjoy if we do get back and resume the season, I guess.”

Bob Corkum, the team’s representative to the NHL Players Assn., said the Ducks are considering a pregame solidarity handshake with the Stars, but he expects some players will find it difficult to play with full intensity.

“You’re playing Friday night and expecting the season to be postponed (next) Saturday, obviously there’s going to be some letup,” he said. “Some guys won’t be up for the game or whatnot. But it’s just a matter of telling yourself it’s still my job and this thing will eventually get worked out.”

Goalie Guy Hebert is away from the team because of a family emergency, and Allan Bester has been recalled from San Diego to replace him temporarily. In addition, the team assigned left wing Denny Lambert to San Diego.
