PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Upsets No. 1 Millikan in Volleyball

Roberta Gehlke had 26 kills as eighth-ranked Mater Dei upset Long Beach Millikan, ranked No. 1 in Division II, 15-9, 15-8, 11-15, 6-15, 15-9, in a nonleague volleyball match Saturday at Mater Dei.

Laurie Layton had 62 assists for the Monarchs (10-4). Millikan is 12-5.

In the Ram Challenge:

Newport Harbor 3, Stockton St. Mary’s 2--Misty May had 36 kills and Melissa Schutz had 25 to lead the Sailors, California’s top-ranked team to a 12-15, 15-12, 15-13, 12-15, 15-7 victory over San Jose St. Mary’s, the third-ranked team, in a rematch of last year’s State semifinal match, which was also won by Newport Harbor in five games.

In an earlier match, Newport Harbor defeated San Jose Archbishop Mitty, the ninth-ranked team in the state, 15-7, 15-4, 15-9. In that match, May had 17 kills and Schutz had 11.

In the Marlborough tournament:

Esperanza captures title--Esperanza, the ninth-ranked team in Division I, captured the championship of the Marlborough tournament with a 16-14 victory over Los Angeles Notre Dame Academy, the fourth-ranked team in Division II. The Aztecs defeated Arcadia, 15-8, in a semifinal game.

In the championship of the Estancia Classic water polo tournament:

Santa Margarita 12, Estancia 6--Brent Reynard had five goals and goalie Steve Ferguson had 20 saves as Santa Margarita (11-9) won the championship.

Eric Wayman and Joe Huang had two goals for Estancia.

In the semifinals:

Estancia 9, Laguna Beach (JV) 8--Chad Bollenbach scored the winning goal two minutes into overtime for Estancia in the semifinal game. Bollenbach, who had four goals in the game, also scored the tying goal with 44 seconds left in regulation.

Santa Margarita 20, Pacifica 3--Tony Bierenkoven had seven goals to lead Santa Margarita (10-9) in a semifinal game.

In other games:

Century 14, Magnolia 8--Jorge Grijalba scored 10 goals to lead Century (10-8) in a consolation game. He also had 17 in a 24-12 victory over Calvary Chapel in an earlier game.

Cypress 17, Garden Grove 8--Erik Sandzig had five goals to lead Cypress (12-9) in a seventh-place game. Mark Slezcove and David Watkins also had four goals for the Centurions.

Jason Holbrook had five goals for Garden Grove (7-10).

Fountain Valley 19, Cypress 14--Tim Causee scored seven goals to lead Fountain Valley (11-9). David Watkins and Erik Sandzig had six goals each for Cypress (11-9).

In nonleague water polo:

Costa Mesa 12, Marina 7--Roger Kirnos scored three goals for visiting Costa Mesa (16-5).

Katella 13 Magnolia 11--Phil Wirthgen had four goals and Jon Fabbro had 14 saves for Katella (14-8). Mike Rothman scored five times for Magnolia.

Newport Harbor 13, Sunny Hills 6--Gabe Wyatt had five goals and Mike Peetz had four goals for Newport Harbor (10-9).
