Several San Gabriel Valley area high schools open play Friday in the Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoffs.

Here’s a look at the matches involving area teams by division:

Division I: Arcadia play host to Esperanza.

Division II: Saugus at San Gabriel and Claremont at Santa Fe.

Division III: South Pasadena at Campbell Hall; Stephen Wise or Murphy at San Marino; Glendale Academy at La Salle and Bishop Amat at Bosco Tech.

* Southern Section badminton playoffs begin Tuesday with many area schools looking to knock off dominant Keppel.

Division I matches involving area teams include: Huntington Beach at Keppel; Pasadena Poly at Rowland; Nogales at Garden Grove; La Habra at Alhambra and Diamond Bar at Westminster.

Division II matches: Sierra Vista at Katella; Rosemead at Colton; Millikan at Wilson; Magnolia-South El Monte wild-card winner at Gladstone; Workman at Loara; Azusa at El Monte; Bonita-Long Beach Poly wild-card winner at Etiwanda.

* Several schools from the San Gabriel Valley are among those ranked in the Southern Section baseball, softball and boys’ tennis and boys’ volleyball polls.

In baseball, Bishop Amat is ranked sixth and Arcadia eighth in Division I. South Hills is third and Glendora sixth in Division II.

Walnut is eighth in Division III. In Division IV, San Marino is second, Temple City fourth, Sierra Vista fifth and Gladstone sixth. Maranatha is eighth and Pasadena Poly ninth in Division V.

In softball, St. Lucy’s is fourth in Division III.

Diamond Bar is sixth in Division I in boys’ tennis. San Marino is fifth in Division II, Pasadena Poly is fourth and Keppel ninth in Division III. Bonita is third, Sierra Vista fourth, San Dimas seventh and La Puente ninth in Division IV.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Several athletes from San Gabriel Valley area community colleges won their events at the regional qualifying meet last weekend in Long Beach and will be among the competitors at this weekend’s state meet in Bakersfield.

Rose Ballesteros of Citrus won the javelin with a mark of 120 feet 6 inches. She also qualified in the shotput and discus. Michelle Bryant of Mt. San Antonio College won the discus (152-7) and also qualified in the shotput.

* Mary Morgan of Pasadena City College was named South Coast Conference swimmer of the year.

COLLEGES

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s tennis team plays Abilene Christian today in the first round of the NCAA Division II championships at UC Davis.

Pomona advanced to the 16-team tournament by defeating Cal State Los Angeles, 4-0, in the West regional last week at Pomona. The Broncos advanced behind the play of doubles teams Mike Burgess and Jesse Sira and Scott Terry and Ron Charles, and singles players Oscar Mancisidor, Steven Kim and Charles.

The Pomona women’s team lost in the regional to Cal State Los Angeles. The Broncos will miss the championships for the first time since 1984.

* Azusa Pacific’s softball team opens play in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Far West regional today at Southern California College.

The four-team tournament will determine the representative in the national finals. Azusa Pacific is led by sophomore Dawn Castaneda, who is batting .414.

Dawn Hebert is 10-1 with a 0.61 earned-run average and has won nine consecutive decisions for Azusa Pacific, which finished the regular season 33-17. Azusa Pacific Coach Sharon Lehman was voted Golden State Athletic Conference coach of the year.

* Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team plays host to Cal State San Bernardino today and then travels to San Bernardino for a doubleheader Saturday that will complete the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. schedule.

Pomona began the week 31-25 and 16-11 in the CCAA, 4 1/2 games behind UC Riverside. Pomona has a shot at an at-large berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs if they finish in second place. * The Azusa Pacific baseball team will begin play in the NAIA Far West Regional next week in Lewiston, Ida.

Azusa Pacific completed the regular season 34-10 and 20-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Cougars, under Coach Tony Barbone, are ranked 14th in the NAIA.

Azusa Pacific suffered a major setback last weekend when pitcher Brian Hagerty sustained a broken arm on a ball hit back to the mound. Hagerty will not participate in the playoffs. He finished the season 11-1 with a 2.40 ERA.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Katy Grubbs, South Pasadena--Grubbs, a senior, won the girls’ 100-meters at the Rio Hondo League swimming championships and the Rio Hondo League shotput title on the same day.

Grubbs, a two-time Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley basketball player, won the 100 meters in swimming in 58.11 seconds. She won the shotput with a put of 37 feet 5 1/2 inches.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Ron Charles, Cal Poly Pomona--Charles teamed with Scott Terry to win a doubles match and also won in singles competition to help Cal Poly Pomona advance to the NCAA Division II tennis championships with a 4-0 victory over Cal State Los Angeles.

MISCELLANY

Clyde Stahl of Rosemead, 87, won the Crown Valley Senior Games bowling competition for the 85-89 age group. Shirley Capps of Altadena and Jean Morningstar of Alhambra won the women’s doubles championship in the 60-64 age group. The games, which concluded last weekend, attracted 1,400 athletes ages 50 and over.

* The San Gabriel Valley Special Olympics area meet will be staged Saturday at Temple City High. Opening ceremonies are at 9 a.m. for a meet that will include an estimated 700 participants. Information: (818) 286-9456.

* The 10th annual reunion of the Pacific Coast League Historical Society will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the city of Carson Civic Center. Admission is free. The reunion will feature a panel discussion, slide show and historical exhibition. Information: (714) 524-0939.

* A youth football coaching clinic, featuring presentations by some of the most successful high school coaches in Southern California, will be staged July 15-16 in Pasadena. * The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged May 27, beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.

CALENDAR

The 26th annual Don Edwards golf tournament, sponsored by the Citrus College athletic department, is scheduled for June 5 at Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas.

* A golf tournament sponsored by the Arcadia Tournament of Roses Assn. is scheduled for June 2 at the San Dimas Canyon course.

* Azusa Pacific University will play host to a grass volleyball tournament on Saturday.

* A benefit golf tournament sponsored by Casa de las Amigas in Pasadena will be staged on Tuesday at the Brookside course in Pasadena.

* The city of La Verne will play host Saturday to a Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation men’s C and D slow-pitch softball tournament.

* A 5-K run/walk sponsored by the GeoSpace Academy at Muir High will be staged at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Rose Bowl. The race is sanctioned by U.S. Track and Field.
