CAMARILLO, SOMIS : 13th Aerial Medfly Spraying Completed
Agriculture officials successfully completed their 13th aerial spraying of the pesticide malathion over eastern Camarillo and Somis on Tuesday in the continuing battle against the crop-destroying Mediterranean fruit fly.
Over the objections of a handful of protesters who picketed the offices of the state and federal Cooperative Medfly Project at Camarillo Airport, the four helicopters left the airport on time at 9 p.m., according to Doug Hendrix, a Medfly project spokesman.
“The protesters were polite and did not present any kind of problems,” Hendrix said.
Hendrix said the helicopters completed their mission in about four hours.
The 14th and final spray mission over the 16-square-mile Medfly eradication zone is scheduled for 9 p.m. May 23.
