American’s Lower Fares Matched: Delta Air Lines Inc., USAir Group Inc. and America West Airlines Inc. said they would match discounts initiated late Tuesday by AMR Corp.’s American Airlines Inc. American cut fares on domestic flights by an average of 35% for travel between June 7 and Oct. 15. Tickets must be purchased by June 2. The fares are non-refundable and require a 14-day advance purchase and a Saturday night stay. American said discounts will be larger in some transcontinental markets and for travel Monday through Thursday. USAir said it is offering the promotion systemwide, though some markets are not included. Other major carriers said their ticket prices will be competitive.
