SANTA ANA : City Renewal Agency May Buy Building

Share

The city’s redevelopment agency today will consider a proposal to buy and renovate the 1924 Grand Central Building as the centerpiece of a downtown artists village.

In addition to purchasing the building at 202 N. Broadway for $1.34 million, the agency would spend as much as $2.5 million for improvements. The city also would provide at least $60,000 worth of subsidies over a four-year period.

The city, in turn, would lease the historic brick building to Cal State Fullerton for $1 a year for 10 years.

The university has proposed operating an art gallery, a gift shop, dance theater and restaurant on the first floor.

The second floor would house up to 45 students and faculty from the university’s art department.

The basement would contain classrooms and a tool workshop.

Renovations would be completed by July, 1997. The 45,000-square-foot building was formerly home to retail stores on the ground floor, with apartments over them.

The city is hoping that an investment in the Grand Central Building will revitalize the area.

The artists village would be a nine-block community bordered by Birch, Bush, 1st and 4th streets.
