THORNY ISSUE: Barbed wire is separating residents of Leisure World Laguna Hills and a carwash proposed next to their golf course. Residents of the retirement community want the wire put atop a planned wall to keep out intruders. Builders say it’s not pretty--or needed. “Unless we’re trying to keep the golfers from climbing over” in search of errant balls, quipped Robert Sundstrom, representing the builders. The issue will go before the Leisure World governing committee in July.

2NTWN PL8Z: Not satisfied with Mickey Mouse T-shirts, a lot of Disney fans wear their mania elsewhere. The new issue of The Disney Magazine has a two-page spread on license plates with Disney themes--from “7DWARFS” in Iowa to “NVNVLND” in New Jersey. . . . Newport Beach resident Toshiki Yamanishi’s plate says “DNLD DUC.” “I’m a big fan,” said Yamanishi, 27, who’s gone to Disneyland 200 times.

DRAGNET: Fountain Valley police are leaving no stone unturned in hunting the gunman who killed jogger Jane Carver near her home June 10 (B1). Saturday, police set up two roadblocks near the slaying site on Warner Avenue to stop motorists and ask if they had seen anything on the day of the killing. Police handed out 3,000 flyers and on Tuesday posted large reward signs. . . . “We’re pulling out all the stops,” said Lt. Bob Mosley.

ON THE ROAD: If you take the kids to the Santa Ana Zoo this summer, don’t expect to see Kitty, Dixie, Tai or the other elephants usually providing $2 rides. The pachyderms are on working vacation until Oct. 7. They won’t be far away. The animals are scheduled to appear at the Orange County Fair, which begins July 7. . . . “Summer is really busy for them,” says zoo curator Connie Sweet. “They have enough other things going on.”
