Cemetery’s War Memorial Wins Praise

Share

* My father is buried at Pacific View Cemetery [in Newport Beach] and my husband and I had the opportunity this past Memorial Day to attend the dedication of the armed forces, law enforcement and fire department monuments. It was a wonderful celebration and tribute to all of the dedicated men and women who have served and continue to serve this great country. The monuments are at the entrance just inside the park and in no way, shape or form could they possibly be of any eyesore or obstruction of view to those that live around the cemetery. One only needs to go and view these beautiful monuments to see that.

I am appalled, dismayed and shocked that there are people in our community who would like to have the recently erected memorial taken down (“City May Order War Memorial Dismantled,” June 15). I must assume that by their opposing the memorial that neither they themselves or any member of their family have ever served in the armed forces in defending this country. I also must assume that they have never needed or do not ever intend to need the help, protection or security of the men and women who give their services and at times the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, that the law enforcement and fire departments give to us on a daily basis.

I would ask that the City Council and those who oppose the memorial go and view the monuments and then perhaps they may come to the same conclusion as I have, that these monuments should remain as a constant reminder of those who have given the extreme sacrifice. and others who continue to protect this great nation.
