LOS ANGELES : Plan Would Let Public Comment by Computer

Los Angeles Councilwoman Ruth Galanter has proposed that the city create a constituent “opinion line” that would allow the public to express views on issues being considered by the council.

Public access to the council agenda and information about city departments already is available through City Link, a computer bulletin board.

The new service would offer one-way communication through the Internet or the city’s electronic bulletin board. Constituents could leave comments for council members on issues pending decisions.

“The council, and government as a whole, cannot serve the best interests of residents without an informed and involved public,” Galanter said in a motion introduced Wednesday.
