There’s Some Debate About Dodgers’ Heart

Share

Is there a professional team in recent memory with more talent and less heart than the 1995 Dodgers? A journeyman (at best) pitcher from the Giants hits Mike Piazza on the wrist in the first inning of an important series. For the remainder of the game, not one of five pitchers throws anything remotely close to a brush-back pitch to a Giant hitter.

No wonder this team is in a dogfight with the Arena Baseball Rockies instead of leading the division by five games or more. The Dodgers have absolutely no heart. Where’s Kirk Gibson when you need him?

Mike Downey, the Dodgers are not “losing their edge.” And you can’t say accurately that they haven’t looked sharp for “weeks, maybe months.” They simply lost a game, after watching their best player go down. Before that, they had won six of nine on a crucial Eastern road trip, and had put together a pretty good stretch.

If it’s heart you want, just look at Tim Wallach. If it’s heart you want, watch Mike Piazza coming back at the earliest possible date. If it’s heart you want, Mike Downey, just pay attention. And cancel your plans to watch night harness racing when the Rockies are in town.
