COLLEGE SIGNINGS : Gardena’s Negrete to Play Basketball for UC Irvine
Gardena High’s Phil Negrete has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at UC Irvine.
Negrete, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound swingman, averaged 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals last season.

Amber Wines of Santa Ana Valley has signed a letter of intent to attend UCLA on a swimming scholarship, her mother, Cheryl, said.
Wines was the 1994 and 1995 Division I section champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, setting a section record last year with a time of 1:03.20. Wines is ranked fourth in the nation, and will swim at the Olympic trials in March.

Katie Lowes of El Toro has signed a letter of intent to swim for California, her father said.
Lowes finished second in the 100-meter freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle in last year’s Southern Section Division I meet.

Huntington Beach’s Melissa Wendt, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter, orally committed to play volleyball at UCLA, Oiler Coach Rocky Ciarelli said.
Wendt, the Sunset League MVP, was a first-team all-county selection last season and was an All-Southern Section selection in her first three years.

Cypress College sophomore shortstop Christa Saindon signed to play softball with Cal State Northridge. She was a member of the junior world team that won the gold medal last July.
Cypress sophomore Keith Ginter, an infielder/outfielder who batted .280 with 21 RBIs and 23 runs scored, will attend Texas Tech.
