COLLEGE FOOTBALL : North Carolina State Wins Despite LaRue’s 545 Yards
Quarterbacks Terry Harvey and Rusty LaRue dueled Saturday, LaRue throwing for an Atlantic Coast Conference-record 545 yards but Harvey tossing five touchdowns as North Carolina State routed Wake Forest, 52-23.
Harvey completed 19 of 22 passes for 326 yards and no interceptions, connecting for two touchdowns apiece with Wolfpack receivers Jimmy Grissett and Mike Guffie.
N.C. State, 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the ACC, scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions, including two touchdowns in the final 31 seconds of the first half.
LaRue completed 50 of 67 passes for three touchdowns, surpassing the single-game conference record of 535 yards thrown by N.C. State’s Shane Montgomery against Duke in 1989.
The loss sent Wake Forest (1-10, 0-8) to its worst record since a 1-10 mark in 1978.
