Share

A 23-year-old man was shot to death in his car Monday by three assailants who had followed him home and fired as many as 30 times, police said.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, had just taken his girlfriend home and arrived at his house about 6:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Shelton Street when four people in a light-colored compact car appeared, Santa Ana Police Lt. Dave Petko said.

Three people got out of the car, all with guns, and fired 20 to 30 times at the man’s car in the driveway, Petko said.

He died in the driver’s seat of multiple gunshot wounds to his back and upper body, Petko said.

Police believe the shooting was gang related because “the victim has been affiliated with gangs in the past,” Petko said.

Monday’s shooting became the city’s 44th gang killing this year. Last year, 41 deaths were recorded.
