Concordia Rallies to Beat SCC in Tournament Opener

Concordia scored 54 points in the second half to beat visiting Southern California College, 79-75, in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament.

Concordia (24-7), with four players in double figures, rallied from an eight-point deficit in the first half, shooting 48% from the field in the second half. Southern California (10-20) shot 53% in the first half, compared to the Eagles’ 32%.

Angela Sather led Concordia with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Heather Carllscored 22 and pulled down 17 rebounds. Jaime Gast had 19 for the Eagles.

Southern California was led by Carrie Burt and Heather Woodruff, who each scored 19.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Point Loma Nazarene 15, SCC 0 (7, rain)--Raul Gonzales had four hits and three runs batted in as Point Loma Nazarene (6-7-1, 3-1) battered SCC pitching. Point Loma had 19 hits.

In nonconference baseball:

Concordia 6, Whittier 2--Senior Derrick Bly was three for four, with two home runs and three RBIs for Concordia (4-6-1). Bly hit a home run in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth. Pitcher Randy Jeter gave up three hits, two runs and struck out 10.

In nonconference softball:

Concordia 0-1, UC Riverside 1-0--Lisa Lefebvre pitched a one-hit shutout as Concordia (7-8) split a doubleheader. UC Riverside’s Renee Chavez pitched a two-hitter in the first game.

Cal State San Bernardino 2-7, Southern California College 1-7--Angie Vega was five for six with four doubles and five RBIs for Southern California College (3-3-2).

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UCLA 3, UC Irvine 0--Paul Nihipali had 22 kills to help UCLA beat UC Irvine, 16-14, 15-12, 17-6. Junior middle blocker Chris Harger recorded 19 kills in UC Irvine’s losing effort. Freshman setter Cory Hinkle had 75 set assists for the Anteaters, who drop to 7-8, 2-8.
