19 Killed, Dozens Injured as 5.7 Quake Rocks Ecuador

An earthquake struck central Ecuador on Thursday, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens.

The quake, which destroyed many houses throughout the Andes mountain range, measured 5.7. Its epicenter was near the communities of Pillaro and Pelileo, 70 miles south of the capital, Quito, according to the National Geophysical Institute.

According to radio reports, at least 40 people were injured and about 70 houses destroyed, but Civil Defense officials could not confirm the information.
