Caught Early

Simi Valley is the latest city in Ventura County to pass a curfew ordinance (B1). . . . Ninth-grader Butch Lyons complains that his early-morning jogs would violate the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. limits. But Police Sgt. Bob Gardner said the law is aimed at troublemakers, not “anybody who has a legitimate reason to be out.” Of course, he added, “that’s not to say the officer won’t have a chat with him.”

Hot Tips

It’s a tough crime to solve: Some misfit with a match airs his shortcomings in a black smear across the landscape. . . . With the fire season already off to a blazing start, the county Sheriff’s Department wants help spotting arsonists. “There are methods of investigation where they may be tracked down . . . even without any witnesses,” says Lt. Bruce Hansen. Otherwise, “the vast majority of them go uncaught.” . . . If you see anything suspicious, call 911.

Veteran Vets

One of the veterans groups marching in today’s ceremony at Ivy Lawn cemetery in Ventura is making its own special observance: The Jewish War Veterans of the United States organization turns 100 this year. . . . With chapters in Thousand Oaks and Ventura, the group plans several local events during the year. Ventura Post Cmdr. Bill Schmidt says the Jewish War Veterans is among the oldest veterans outfits in the country.
