Snowmobiling in Paradise

Active travelers over 49 who enjoy winter sports can go snowmobiling on six-, seven- and eight-day tours with Backroads, an adventure travel company that has published its annual schedule of seniors-only tours. A choice of dates is available in December, January and February. Guests are lodged at the Cowboy Village Resort at Togwotee Pass, Wyo., nestled among the pines at an elevation of 8,500 feet.

Guests have a choice of accommodations that include either lodge rooms or cabins. Rates for rooms and cabins vary with the choice of dates and length of stay. For the tours, lodge rooms stays range from $1,129 to $1,549 and cabins from $1,219 to $1,719. Cabins have two rooms, refrigerator, sink and stove. Prices are on a per-person basis.

Although air fare to Jackson Hole is not included, all packages include round-trip transportation from Jackson Hole, Wyo., to the lodge; accommodations, buffet breakfast and gourmet dinner each day; lunches while on tour to Yellowstone National Park; use of hot tubs and saunas; and all taxes and gratuities. Also included are an individual snowmobile with all gas and oil, plus professional guides, instructions and snowmobile clothing.

The concluding trip of European Walking Tours’ 1996 season for adults over 50 will be a nine-day Walk Through Scotland, Sept. 19 to 28. The tour features a leisurely and educational guided tour with two- to three-hour walks each morning and afternoon through the Scottish countryside. Home base for the first half of the trip is the secluded town of Braemar. Lodging will be at the Invercauld Arms, an inn built in the 1700s. The final four days of the tour will be in the medieval village of Melrose, south of Edinburgh and immortalized by Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. This portion of the tour includes walks to nearby lochs, abbeys, waterfalls, moors and Roman ruins. Guests stay in the 18th century Burts hotel, for the last half of the tour.

Most of the walking routes are on gently rolling countryside, some of it uphill. Guests reside in first-class lodging with private room and bath, breakfast and dinner daily, travel director and native guides, motor coach for luggage and transportation, plus all taxes and gratuities for services.
