Laguna Beach Tops Claremont Webb on Total Games

Amy Falcone and Michelle Demateis won only one set in Tuesday’s Division V quarterfinals, but it was the final match of the day and the most important one for top-seeded Laguna Beach.

The 6-3 victory by Falcone and Demateis in doubles, tied the set score at 9-9 and gave the Artists the victory on games, 86-73, over Claremont Webb.

Laguna Beach (14-8) will play the winner of Santa Ynez-Carpinteria Cate in the semifinals on Thursday.

In Division I matches:

Corona del Mar 16, Redlands 2--Nina Vaughan swept in singles, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6, for second-seeded Corona del Mar (19-3). The Sea Kings host third-seeded Palos Verdes Peninsula, an 18-0 winner over Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals.

Newport Harbor 18, Diamond Bar 0--Juniors Erica Nelson and Brooke Taylor swept in doubles without losing a game, as did Vanessa Godbey in singles, for top-seeded Newport Harbor (22-2). The Sailors visit Camarillo in the semifinals Thursday, which upset fourth-seeded Santa Barbara on games (80-69).

In Division II matches:

Dana Hills 15, University 3--Summer Tantee swept in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, to lead top-seeded Dana Hills (19-2). University ends its season 12-9.

Dana Hills will play Santa Maria Righetti in the semifinals Thursday, with a coin flip to decide the site.

Mater Dei 15, Downey Warren 3--Melissa Esmero didn’t lose a game for third-seeded Mater Dei (16-5). The Monarchs will play Palm Desert, a 10-8 upset winner over second-seeded Villa Park (15-5). The semifinal site will be decided by a coin toss.

In Division III matches:

Woodbridge 12, Laguna Hills 6--Natalie Exon swept in singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for top-seeded Woodbridge (21-2). The Warriors will play fourth-seeded Santa Margarita in the semifinals with a coin toss to decide the site.

In Division IV:

Rosary 15, Hacienda Heights Wilson 3--Rosary’s Eleanor Luzano didn’t lose a game, sweeping in singles. Top-seeded Rosary (21-1) plays fourth-seeded Calabasas Thursday, with the site to be determined by a coin toss.
