Written off four weeks ago when it had a 2-5 record, Western has rebounded with three consecutive victories and now faces the unenviable task of taking on the top-ranked team in the division in the first round of the playoffs. This is a gut-check for Toby Howell, the Pioneers’ first-year coach who must find a way to at least slow down, if not stop, Servite quarterback Greg Cicero. Servite has been scoring a lot of points against opponents who in many ways resemble Western. The Friars scored a low for them in a Golden West League game three weeks ago, defeating Saddleback, 34-7.
