Ponchak Commits to Nevada

Orange Coast baseball player Chris Ponchak has signed to attend Nevada next fall, Pirate Coach John Altobelli said Wednesday.

Ponchak, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore from Fountain Valley High, played first base and outfield for the Pirates last season. He batted .298 with a team-leading 15 doubles. He had three home runs and 15 runs batted in.

Cypress College relief pitcher Brian Greene has signed with San Jose State. The sophomore right-hander from Servite pitched in 18 games last season, recording two saves and striking out 24 in 33 innings.

Three Saddleback College baseball players signed with four-year universities, Gaucho Coach Jack Hodges said.

Outfielder Ryan Ruiz signed with Texas Tech, left-handed pitcher Greg Workman signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and right-handed pitcher Ryan Tack signed with Loyola Marymount.

Ruiz, from El Toro High, was an All-Orange Empire Conference selection last season. Workman, from San Clemente High, was drafted out of high school in the 12th round by the Cardinals and Tack was a 28th-round selection by the Yankees.

Kati Franck, a softball pitcher for Oakhurst Yosemite High, has signed with Cal State Fullerton. Franck has a three-year varsity record of 61-8 with a 0.50 ERA. She has pitched six no-hitters and 13 one-hitters.

Amy Steele of Brigham Young has been named to the GTE All-American first team for District VIII as selected by the Collegiate Sports Information directors of America. Steele, a junior middle blocker, graduated from Laguna Hills High in 1994.

Senior outside hitter Colleen Moro of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has been named to the second team. She attended Fountain Valley High, and was named to the team for the second consecutive year.

A site has been selected for St. Margaret’s football game Friday against Palos Verdes Peninsula Chadwick in the first round of the Division XII playoffs. The teams will play at Redondo Beach Redondo Union High School. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
