So the kids are upset because Courtney Love may have sold out to the mainstream dream of becoming a Hollywood star (Pop Eye, March 30).

Maybe now, some of you youngsters can better relate to the angst of my generation when we made the discovery that underneath the long hair and animal-fur vests, Sonny Bono was actually a Republican. Who knew? Show business is a very curious world.

Expecting an artist to maintain a certain style of behavior in and outside the realm of creative expression is antithetical to artistic and personal growth. The “gut-wrenching angst” of “Live Through This” will stand forever as a snapshot of Hole at this stage in their development. This is the point of record making--to capture an emotional state in the form of musical expression for posterity, liberating the artist to move on to the next work.

Disapproval of Love’s new-found civility is not only unfair but narrow-minded, implying a choice of extremes with mainstream sellout status on one hand and perpetual adolescence on the other.
