New York-New Jersey MetroStar goalkeeper Tony Meola set a Major League Soccer record with 15 saves, but Jaime Moreno’s goal in the 89th minute gave defending league champion Washington United a 2-1 victory in its home opener before 28,749 at RFK Stadium.

United (2-0) set an MLS mark with 20 shots on goal and tied a record with 28 shots total, but the MetroStars (0-3) were still able to tie the score in the 77th minute on Antony De Avila’s goal.

Meola’s 15 saves broke New England goalkeeper Aidan Heaney’s record of 14 set last season.

Meola--who made a league-record 11 saves in the second half--could not prevent Moreno’s winning shot, which was set up by a cross from Steve Rammel. Midfielder John Harkes, whose eight shot attempts tied a league record, assisted by getting the ball to Rammel on the left side of the penalty area.
