Cypress’ Bunn Picks Southern Utah

Wes Bunn Jr. of Cypress, a Times all-county choice, has orally committed to play basketball at Southern Utah, he said Wednesday.

Bunn, a 6-foot 1-inch guard, averaged 16.2 points and 6.9 assists last season for the Centurions, helping them win the Empire League title.

Woodbridge’s Natalie Exon, a first-team Times all-county girls’ tennis selection last year, will sign a letter of intent with UC Irvine, according to her mother, Marjie.

Irvine’s Sarah Denson, a two-time Sea View League singles champion, signed with Long Beach State during the fall period. Calvary Chapel’s Nichole Kojima signed during the fall period with Boise State.

Rancho Alamitos is looking for a new boys’ varsity basketball coach. Gary Lira coached the Vaqueros to a 1-24 record last season, 1-11 in the Garden Grove League. Lira is applying for the position, but the school is searching for a coach with a teaching credential, which Lira does not have, Athletic Director Dan Rankin said.

The Piranhas of the Arena Football League open their 1997 training camp today in Orange.

Practices, which run twice daily through April 17, are at the Piranhas Training Facility at 2190 N. Canal St.

Former Sunny Hills center Gary Trendel, a senior at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, was voted first-team All-University Athletic Assn.

A 6-foot-8 center, he averaged 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds. A civil and environmental engineering major, Trendel expects to graduate next month.
