SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Remy McCarthy, an assistant coach for the Moorpark College men’s basketball team the past two years, has been named the Raiders’ head coach pending approval by the Ventura County Community College District.

McCarthy, a Moorpark player in the late 1970s and the Raider women’s basketball coach for part of the 1994-95 season, takes over for Del Parker, who resigned after last season.

“I’m excited about it,” McCarthy said. “I went to school there, I played there and I’ve coached there before. I like the opportunity to coach at Moorpark.”

McCarthy, 40, already has done a lot coaching for the Raiders. Besides serving as Parker’s assistant, he finished the 1994-95 season as coach of the women’s basketball team after Lisa Ziegler resigned. He also served as a men’s basketball assistant under Al Nordquist from 1979-83 and was the softball coach from 1981-83.

A Camarillo High graduate and Camarillo resident, McCarthy has spent nearly his entire life in Ventura County, leaving only for a four-year stint as an assistant under former Utah Coach Lynn Archibald from 1983-87 and spending one season (1987-88) as coach of the Wenatchee Valley (Wash.) College men’s basketball team.

McCarthy returned to the area in 1988 and coached the Oxnard College men’s basketball team through the 1992-93 season. His teams compiled an 86-68 record.

“My whole identity has always been involved with basketball,” McCarthy said. “I really love the game, but what I love most about basketball is the coaches. Most of my best friends are coaches.”
