Two men who allegedly tried to steal copper wire from a former chicken ranch Monday morning had their plans scrambled when Ventura County sheriff’s deputies chased them down in surrounding orchards and arrested them.

At 11 a.m., a deputy saw two men parked at Egg City, in the 8400 block of Shekel Road, a business that has been closed for about a year.

When the deputy attempted to question them, the men ran away, according to Det. George Masek.

One of the men, Christopher Schemm, 37, was caught after a brief foot chase.

Deputies used a helicopter and ground units to search for the other man. Quinn Summitt, 25, was arrested a short time later.

An investigation revealed that the men were allegedly in the process of stealing copper wire from the shuttered business, Masek said. The men, both of Oxnard, were booked at the East Valley Sheriff’s Station and held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
