Man Killed by Train in Apparent Suicide
A man died in an apparent suicide Thursday after getting down on his hands and knees in front of a freight train, police said.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was the second person in the Los Angeles area who was struck by a train and killed Thursday. A pedestrian was hit by a freight train in Pacoima early Thursday.
El Monte Police Sgt. Robert Elkin said the man was seen walking under the crossing arms as a westbound train approached the Tyler Avenue crossing about 11:30 a.m. The engineer on the 61-car freight train, which was traveling about 35 mph, sounded the horn and tried to stop the train, but the man did not move, Elkin said.
He said it took the train a third of a mile to come to a halt.
The man was taken to Greater El Monte Community Hospital but died of the injuries.
The Pacoima incident occurred about 3:30 a.m.
