Using the new contract of basketball Coach Steve Lavin and those at other Pacific 10 Conference schools to set the market, UCLA has signed football Coach Bob Toledo to a two-year contract extension that will bring his salary into line.

Toledo’s compensation package will be $403,000 annually through the 2001 season, Peter Dalis, UCLA’s athletic director, said Wednesday.

UCLA contracts--A story Thursday on a new contract between UCLA and football Coach Bob Toledo incorrectly reported the average salary of basketball Coach Steve Lavin. Lavin is averaging $475,000 a year in total compensation through the 2001-2002 season.

The contract extension has been in the works since the summer, as long as the negotiations have gone on between Dalis and Lavin’s representatives, and Toledo signed off on it in August. But the final figure and Dalis’ signature were not fixed until Monday.

“The money’s nice, but the security is more important to me. I’m older than Lavin,” cracked Toledo, 51, who, upon replacing retired coach Terry Donahue, had signed a four-year contract through 1999 worth $285,000, plus a $45,000 loan, 25% of which was forgiven for each year he coached.

Lavin is 33.

Lavin’s package is actually $32,000 more per year, averaging $435,000. The difference between the two pacts is money paid to the coaches for summer camps. Lavin has larger camps that go on for three weeks, and for which he is paid $35,000. Toledo’s football camp is one week, is not as well-attended and he is paid $3,000 for it.
