Officials List Priorities for Improving Park

A new priority list for improvements at Hillcrest Park includes rehabilitation of its historic elements, creation of a parking lot and playground, construction of a bridge and other projects, city officials say.

“A lot of people in this community have a great deal of affection for the park,” Councilwoman Jan M. Flory said. “This is an asset for the city that must be maintained.”

The items on the list, which also include road and pedestrian trail expansion, installation of an irrigation system and construction of a new reservoir and water line, will be implemented over the next three years.

Funding for the projects will be provided by the city’s water and redevelopment funds.

The 40-acre park, between Harbor Boulevard and Lemon Street, south of Brea Boulevard, opened in 1924.

Last year, the city began rehabilitating its premiere landmark by removing dead trees, planting new ones and doing a general cleanup.

Total cost of the work is estimated at $6.9 million.
