The 1999 Nike Extravaganza boys’ basketball showcase will expand to eight games and be played at Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 6, Mater Dei Athletic Director and Coach Gary McKnight said Thursday.

Eight county teams have accepted invitations, including state Division II champion Santa Margarita, which faces a rematch with Servite, which upset the Eagles, 46-43, in February.

Southern Section Division III-AA champion Ocean View is scheduled to play Miami Senior, defending Division I-A champion Glendora will play Troy and defending Division I-AA champion Lakewood Artesia is expected to play Capistrano Valley.

Long Beach Poly is slated to play Villa Park, Tustin is scheduled against Upland and Mater Dei will host Oakland Bishop O’Dowd.

Three-time defending Division II-A champion Compton Dominguez is scheduled to play perennial national power Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy.

McKnight said game times will be released later this year.

UC Irvine has been the site since the event began in 1995, but the Bren Center is unavailable because of a conflict with the Anteaters’ women’s basketball schedule, McKnight said.

Thomas Bailey, a 24-year coaching veteran from the Chicago area, has been hired as football coach at Canyon, Athletic Director Rob Alexander said.

Bailey replaces Bob Hughes, who led Canyon to four playoff appearances in the last five years, but who was asked to resign after the Comanches finished 1-9 last season.

Bailey guided Homewood-Flossmoor High to an Illinois state title in 1994, Alexander said.
