BYU Wins Team Titles at UC Irvine Track Meet

Brigham Young won the men’s and women’s team titles Saturday at the UC Irvine Spring Break track and field invitational.

Leonard Myles Mills won the 100 meters (10.28) and the 200 (20.90) to lead the BYU men, who won the meet with 227 1/2 points, 57 points ahead of second-place Air Force. Host UC Irvine was third with 81, followed by Cal State Fullerton (80) and Minnesota (37).

In the women’s competition, UCI’s Florence Sterni helped the Anteaters to an early lead with victories in the 100 (12.13) and the 200 (24.99). Khara Covington hit a career best in the long jump at 19 feet 1/2 inch, as the Anteaters finished in fourth place with 122 points. BYU’s women won with 204 points.

At the Claremont track and field invitational:

Negrete breaks school record--Phil Negrete set a Southern California College record in the long jump with a 22-5 effort. SCC had five event winners, including Negrete. Brian Carlson won the high jump (6-6 3/4), Isis Gonzalez won the 200 (25.88) and Maribel Delgado won the 800 (2:22.86). Gina Jojola won the javelin (108-1).

In nonconference baseball:

Eastern Connecticut State 3-2, Southern California College 0-5--Greg Schreiber had two hits, including a solo home run, and two runs batted in to earn a split in the second game of the doubleheader. SCC starter Joe Rivera (3-3) went four innings, giving up three hits and one run.

In the first game, Eastern Connecticut scored two runs off Vanguard starter David Ross and one off reliever Josh Steele. Southern California College (17-15) had only two hits for the game, both in the first inning.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 1-5, Azusa Pacific 0-0--In the bottom of the first inning, Valerie Irwin’s two-out single drove in Chrissy Vega for Southern California College (28-6, 2-0). Gretchen Brandt picked up her 12th victory of the season, limiting Azusa Pacific (13-17, 0-2) to one hit.

In the second game, Vega had two hits and two runs and Val Irwin and Michelle Murie each had an RBI.

SCC pitcher Jen Houston (15-3) limited Azusa Pacific to three hits and struck out five.
