Guard Arthur Lee set the tone for the Cardinal by making a three-point shot for the game’s first basket. Stanford made six of 13 three-point attempts, with Lee and guard Kris Weems making three apiece. Kentucky failed to score on its first four possessions, and forward Scott Padgett shot an air ball from three-point range. The Cardinal opened the game with an 8-0 lead, with Lee scoring all eight, and increased the margin to 15-5 after forward Peter Sauer scored on a 15-foot bank shot with 14:13 to play. Forward Allen Edwards sparked a 9-0 Kentucky run to get the Wildcats within one after completing a three-point play. But Stanford made four of five free throws during an 8-3 run to take a 23-17 lead with about nine minutes to play. Kentucky came back again and Jeff Sheppard scored on a layup with 2:13 left to again get his team within one point, 33-32. The Wildcats got within one point of the Cardinal four times and each time Stanford held on to the lead.

Kentucky came out pressuring the ball and after Stanford missed its first shot, Edwards scored the first basket of the half. Stanford’s front line looked like it would take control after that. Baskets by center Tim Young, Sauer and Madsen gave the Cardinal a 46-36 lead with about 17 minutes to play. But Kentucky countered with center Nazr Mohammed, who scored six points points in the Wildcats’ next three possessions. A 10-4 run was capped by Mohammed intercepting a pass and finishing with a dunk. The Wildcats trailed 53-52 with 12:54 to play. They took their first lead, 54-53 with 10:04 remaining when Padgett made two foul shots. There were eight lead changes. In overtime, Kentucky scored the first five points. Stanford turned the ball over on its first two possessions and Weems then missed a three-point shot. The Wildcats led 77-73 with under three minutes remaining. Lee was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to get Stanford within 79-78. Sheppard followed with a key three-pointbasket.
