Serrata’s Home Run in Seventh Lifts Hueneme, 8-7

For the second time in two Southern Section Division II baseball playoff games, Hueneme High advanced on a seventh-inning home run.

Mike Serrata’s first home run of the season, a two-run blast that barely cleared the center-field fence with one out, gave the Vikings an 8-7 upset victory over No. 3-seeded Righetti on Tuesday in a second-round game at Hueneme.

Miguel Bravo gave Hueneme (18-10) a 5-4 lead with a two-run triple during a three-run fifth inning, but Righetti (22-3) scored three runs off reliever Lee Lewis (5-6) in the sixth inning.

Francisco Camarena had two hits for Hueneme and Chris Neri had a run-scoring double.

In other Division II second-round games:

La Mirada 16, Valencia 12--La Mirada had three home runs to account for nine runs at Valencia.

Eric Zambrano had three hits and Brady Burrill had two hits, including a two-run home run to highlight a seven-run seventh inning that pulled Valencia to within 16-12.

Burrill also had a run-scoring double.

Marty Mears had a solo home run in the fourth inning for Valencia (17-11).

Steve Dorneman had a grand slam in the seventh inning for La Mirada (18-8).

DIVISION III

Moorpark 8, South Torrance 1--Starter Wes Rasmussen (6-1) gave up five hits, struck out six and walked two in six innings for Moorpark in a game at South Torrance.

Rasmussen had two hits and two runs batted in and teammate Matt Norris had three hits and two RBIs.

Moorpark (20-7) will play Westlake in a quarterfinal game Thursday at a site to be determined.

Westlake 15, Dos Pueblos 3--Doug Hutton and Mike Brin each had two hits and each drove in three runs in a game at UC Santa Barbara called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Junior right-hander Mike Alba (4-0) went the distance, allowing three hits and no earned runs. Alba struck out four.

Ryan Cope had a double for Westlake (17-10).

Burroughs 10, Charter Oak 0--Tommy Perez drove in four runs with a three-run home run and two doubles for host Burroughs (16-12) in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Burroughs’ Tony Sandoval (5-5) pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk.

Sandoval had a run-scoring triple.

Burroughs took advantage of six walks and two errors by Charter Oak.

DIVISION IV

St. Francis 17, Hesperia 1--Fernando Valenzuela had a grand slam, a run-scoring single and two stolen bases for host St. Francis (15-9-1) in a game at Brookside Park that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Gino Pierotti (1-1), Justin Dunn and Heberto Blandon combined on a three-hitter.

Pierotti allowed two hits, walked six and struck out two in two innings. Dunn walked two in two hitless innings and Blandon allowed one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Matt Blaney scored three runs on a walk and two hits, including a run-scoring triple.

DIVISION V

L.A. Baptist 9, Windward 2--The Knights scored five runs in the fifth inning to extend a 2-1 lead at Windward.

Scott Swenson had two hits and drove in three runs for L.A. Baptist (19-5).

Swenson had a run-scoring single in the second inning and a two-run single in the fifth that gave the Knights a 5-1 lead. Raul Pacheco had three hits and scored two runs.

Evan Regenstreif (6-2) struck out five over four hitless innings. Tim Feirfeil worked out of a none-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh without allowing a run.

Feirfeil had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the seventh. Peter Dirksen had two hits, including a double and a run-scoring single.

Viewpoint 13, Mammoth 1--Artin Sedighan drove in five runs, including a fifth-inning grand slam that ended the game at Calabasas High because of the 10-run rule.

Kareem Shaarawy had two hits and drove in three runs for Viewpoint (16-6). Senior right-hander Chaney Sheffield struck out 11 and allowed seven hits in five innings.

Kern Valley 4, Campbell Hall 3--Sophomore Michael Frost (9-4) threw a six-hitter and struck out seven, but Kern Valley (17-3) scored four unearned runs in the sixth in a game at Campbell Hall.

The Vikings (15-10) pulled within 4-3 on a two-run home run by Greg Kriegler with two out in the seventh, but Frost flied out to end the game.

Kriegler had three hits and teammate Steve Kimn had two.

St. Bonaventure 7, Malibu 6--David Chapparo’s ninth-inning, one-out triple drove in Frank Quinones with the winning run at St. Bonaventure and the Seraphs recorded their second extra-inning victory in three playoff games.

Quinones, who reached on a fielder’s choice, had a run-scoring single in the seventh that capped a three-run rally and tied the score, 6-6.

Joe Echeveste had a two-run triple in the seventh and scored on Quinones’ single.

Zach Gallagher (2-1) struck out two and gave up one hit in three innings in relief of starter Gilbert Infante.

Tim Coultas had a run-scoring single in the first inning and drove in a run on a groundout in the sixth.

St. Bonaventure (11-12), an at-large entry from the Tri-Valley League, defeated St. Monica, 11-3, in eight innings in a first-round game.

DIVISION VI

Grace Brethren 10, North County Christian 0--Danny Buckley had two hits and scored two runs, and Chris Delaplane had two hits and drove in a run for Grace Brethren (20-2) in a first-round game at Grace Brethren.

Tim Thompson (11-0) struck out four and allowed two hits in three innings.

Buckley allowed one hit in three innings.
