Mayor George Brown is leaving his council seat in two weeks because he was elected to the Coast Community College District board. Brown said when he initially sought to run for the college board, he was assured he could hold both positions. But about a week before the Aug. 12 deadline to file paperwork, he learned that the city charter prohibits him from serving in both positions.

Brown is halfway through his second four-year term and because of term limits could not have run for reelection. So he said he decided to stick with his commitment to run for the college district, which includes Coastline, Golden West and Orange Coast colleges; he won with 68,700 votes.

Brown’s last day on the council will be Dec. 3. The council will then have 30 days to appoint a successor.
