1st Step Taken Toward City Hall Seismic Repair

Share

The City Council has taken the first step toward seismic retrofitting of Pasadena City Hall that may cost up to $71 million.

Council members this week agreed to hire a firm to oversee initial work on the project and also established two special committees to oversee architectural and financial aspects of the work. Council members are expect to make a decision on the scope of the project later this year after a series of public meetings.

Robert Reed, city architect, warned the council that without the retrofitting, the Mediterranean-style structure would partially collapse in a major quake.

Council members hired the construction management firm Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall for a $100,000 contract to oversee initial planning. Last year the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s inspector general found the firm overcharged the agency more than $2.1 million for work on the Metro Rail subway project. The firm, which strongly denied that it overbilled, has not been required to repay any money.
