Serrano Creek could get a boost tonight when the City Council considers lifting all fees for cleaning projects by a local nonprofit group.

The council will consider waiving about $3,000 in permit fees as well as allowing construction valued at about $6,000 on city-owned land.

The Serrano Creek Conservancy earlier this summer received a $148,000 grant from the state for three urban stream restoration projects along the creek.

“The grant was very important for a citizens group like ours,” said conservancy founder Matt Rayl, who experienced the drastic effects of floods in 1991 when part of his property was washed away. “The funds allow us to be one of the players in restoring the creek.”

Part of the grant money go toward completion of the Quiet Oaks restoration project, which the organization launched last year to repair the eroded and polluted Quiet Oak Creek, which empties urban runoff into Serrano Creek.
